ON DISCOVERING YOUR CHILD HAS A LEARNING DISABILITY -
A PARENT'S VIEW

A new baby creates major life changes for the family into which s/he is born. There are new demands and changing relationships.  If that baby is diagnosed as having a learning disability, it is likely that there will be additional demands to cope with. The demands involved are considerable. However, many parents come to feel that their child and the associated challenges have made a positive contribution to their lives.

Some parents may find it hard to feel positive or hopeful. The reactions of some parents to the birth or diagnosis of a child with disabilities can be similar to those who experience bereavement, that is, shock, disbelief, guilt, anger and sadness.  Others will have different responses. It is important to realise that there is no right or wrong way to feel as everyone, and everyone’s circumstances, will differ.

Although people will respond in different ways to the news that their child has disabilities, it is likely that they will all need help and support; someone who will listen, honesty and accurate information. While family members can provide much of this support, some people may be without their families or feel unable to share personal details with those closest to them.  Whatever a person’s individual circumstances or responses may be, we hope that this handbook will prove of assistance, to all those involved, towards finding the help and information needed.
