INDEPENDENT LIVING SCHEME
York Council for Voluntary Service (Registered Charity No 2250877) manages the Independent Living Scheme. It was set up in 1994 in response to research commissioned by NYCC Adult and Community Services Department which revealed that many disabled people had expressed a wish to have more control over their personal assistance arrangements. NYCC Adult and Community Services Department currently funds the scheme.
The Independent Living Scheme enables disabled people, with a need for Personal Assistance, to employ their own staff in order to lead their chosen lifestyles in the community.
Referrals are often made by Social Workers and Care Managers, or other agencies e.g. Disability Groups and through direct contact from individuals. The provision is based on an assessment of needs carried out by a Care Manager. People using funds provided through Social Services are usually expected to make a contribution towards the cost of their assistance based on a financial assessment carried out by Adult and Community Services. The Independent Living Scheme is an alternative form of support for those people who choose to use it.
