There are many sources of help and information available to those who care for someone with learning disabilities.  Finding and making use of these resources, however, can be a difficult, time consuming and frustrating task.  This handbook is an attempt to help with this problem.

It is hoped that the information contained in this handbook will act as a starting point for anyone wishing to know what is available, how to take advantage of it and find the assistance they need. It is not designed to be read from cover to cover – not all the information will be relevant to each person – but we hope it will be useful and handy to keep by your ‘phone. 

Changes within organisations and in the law, for example, will mean that information will become inaccurate and will need amending. We would welcome feedback to help us keep the information in this handbook as up to date as possible.

As Chairman of The Northallerton and the Dales Mencap Society, I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to all those who have worked hard to complete this handbook and who have contributed to its review. I would also like to thank those who have provided financial support for the project. We hope that this source of information will continue to be of real assistance towards pointing ‘the way ahead’.
